New Health Paradigm
New Health Paradigm What I am calling the New Health Paradigm is mainly a shifting away from relying on institutionalized medicine and a rediscovering of natural and holistic healing practices. With the rising costs of medical care, insurance and drugs, many people are turning to "alternative" medicine simply because they cannot afford modern medical care. Others, through experience or research, have become disenchanted with modern medicine and are seeking alternatives. Still others are learning to combine modern and alternative medicine, blending the best of both worlds. There is a lot of focus today on the politics and economics of health care. While these issues are important, I feel they can eclipse more fundamental problems with the expensive, bureaucratic and drug-centered health care system. It's not simply a problem that can be fixed by giving more people access to this system. The system itself needs to be rethought in many ways. When we speak of health alternatives, this can mean many things. At the most radical end of the spectrum, you have theories that question the very concepts of disease, germs and conventional diagnosis. You also have nutritional theories, such as raw foods and macrobiotic that advocate a food-based solution to health. At the more conservative end of the continuum, you have people like Andrew Weil, who have a traditional (to modern society, that is) background in medicine and seek to combine the conventional with the alternative. Then you have a wide middle ground between the two. If you study alternative medicine for any length of time, you will quickly find that there are many theories out there that contradict each other. So it's not simply a case of alternative vs. traditional or allopathic vs. homeopathic medicine. There are really many theories out there and there is no simple answer to which is best. Most likely, there is no one answer for everyone. You really have to do some self experimentation and find out what makes you feel best. It's also a good idea to keep up with research, books and theories on the subject. Finally, keep both an open and skeptical mind, whether the advice comes from an M.D. or an alternative practitioner.
